Moore Buddies is a private, non-profit agency dedicated to
the youth in Moore County who are either entering the
Juvenile Justice System due to delinquent behavior or who
are at risk of not reaching their full potential due to a variety
of factors. Youth who need a positive adult role model, close
monitoring of school, home, and community behavior, as well
as opportunities to learn social, recreational, vocational and
educational skills can benefit from our agency. Youth are
referred to Moore Buddies by the Juvenile Justice system,
Moore County schools, Department of Social Services,
parents and youth themselves.
Youth development experts now agree that mentoring is a
critical element in any child's social, emotional and cognitive
development. It builds a sense of industry and competency,
boosts academic performance and broadens horizons.
Without doubt, young people who have the benefit of caring
adult mentors navigate the path to adulthood more
successfully.
In Honor of Hugh Joyce’s dedication and commitment to the cause of mentoring and volunteerism, the Hugh Joyce Award is given to a volunteer that goes “above and beyond.” While all of our mentors meet this definition, this year’s recipient was Carol Lamphier for her tireless effort and support of her mentee’s educational endeavors.
